Question: Our first question is from @Ryan Coe, who asks, "Regarding the Gulf restoration, are there any innovative machines/vehicles coming that could show to be labor saving? This is in reference to the shoreline restoration primarily."

Answer: Thanks for your question, Ryan. More than 123,000 suggestions have been submitted to BP from internal and external parties. Individuals providing suggestions ranged from 9- to 90-year-olds from all around the world, and provided ideas in support of our response efforts. From these, about 80,000 were focused on the subsea well and stopping the flow, and more than 40,000 were focused on our surface response from offshore to onshore. 

A team of more than 80 scientists, engineers, and other specialists evaluated and continue to evaluate these ideas to identify those that could help immediately and those that could be long term ideas for the future. Examples of some of these ideas that we have tested and implemented include tar ball recovery techniques, tar mat recovery techniques both near-shore and on the beaches. We have developed machinery including the Sand Sharks, Land Sharks and significant modifications of machinery used in the road building industries as well as existing beach cleaning machinery to support our efforts on removing oil that impacted our shorelines. We continue to look for both new and continuing enhancements to ensure our success at cleaning both the beaches and impacted marshes. 

To date, there are more than 61 differing types of mechanical machines being used along with 6,000 people working every day in this effort.

HOUSTON — As oil spewed from the BP well in the Gulf of Mexico last summer, so did ideas on how to stop it and clean it up.
BP received about 123,000 ideas, 80,000 of which had to do with plugging the leak and 43,000 on ways to clean up the oil. The ideas came in crayon from 9-year-old boys, in shaky handwriting from 90-year-old men and from scientists, inventors and engineers — even actor Kevin Costner.
Most of the ideas weren't workable: freeze the well into submission or bury it in a nuclear explosion. Many of the ideas had already been tried or discarded. Some of the ideas would've created other problems: dump popcorn from airplanes to soak up oil but create a tasty toxic treat for marine life.
But more than 100 ideas were good enough to be tested, and more than two dozen were deployed to help clean up the oil. While there were no magic bullets buried in the entrepreneurial surge, there were improvements to existing cleanup technologies. They'll improve the industry's ability to respond to future spills, given new skimmers to scoop oil, new boom to sop it up, new equipment to clean beaches and other technologies, BP and others say.
"If there's anything good to come out of this spill, that'll be it," says Hunter Rowe, a BP senior manager who has worked since May on vetting the submissions. "We were hoping for the breakthrough, the silver bullet. None came," Rowe says. Instead, people made "incremental improvements," he says.
That's typical for the oil spill response industry, which has long been starved for research funding. Federal funding for oil spill response research was cut in half between 1993 and 2008, falling to $7.7 million in fiscal year 2008, data from the Congressional Research Service show. That occurred despite calls for more research after the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 — the most notorious U.S. oil spill before BP's.
"We were still using the same techniques on the BP spill as we did with the Exxon Valdez," says Bob Deans of the Natural Resources Defense Council. "That's what angered people."
Douglas Helton of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration testified at a congressional hearing last year that oil spill research in the private and public sectors had declined, in part, because larger spills had become less frequent.
As a result, there's little incentive for companies to invest in potentially expensive products that serve as the equivalent of a "seat belt," Costner testified at a congressional hearing in June. He invested $20 million in an oil-water separator that grabbed his attention after the Exxon Valdez spill. BP leased 32 of the machines, but only after the spill and after facing a firestorm of public scorn.
"In the past, the whole effort for the oil companies centered ... (on) preventing a spill," says Bruce Bullock, director of the Maguire Energy Institute in Dallas. "Hopefully, this event has changed that, and companies will think about prevention, containment and cleanup."
The ideas came to BP from more than 100 countries. At the peak, about 4,000 a day poured in via e-mail, websites, BP's call-in center and even command posts set up amid Louisiana's marshes and Florida's beaches.
"I had 50 nutcases a day walk through the door," says David Kinnaird, a BP project manager who helped coordinate BP's response from a Louisiana command center.
But Kinnaird saw something workable from Scott Smith, who marched into the command center as the spill unfolded.
Smith's company, the Massachusetts-based Cellect Technologies, makes a foam, Opflex, that repels water but absorbs oil. Previously used in the medical, construction and other fields, Smith brought it to the Gulf and "spent days living with fishermen" trying to get his foam into the water.
All sorbent-boom manufacturers claim that their products repel water. But sooner or later, they don't, Kinnaird says. BP's tests found that Opflex went weeks without absorbing water. When oiled, it could be wrung out and reused. It's also biodegradable, Kinnaird says. Traditional absorbent boom often ends up in landfills as hazardous waste.
"This was completely different from anything I'd seen," Kinnaird says. Through the spill, BP bought 2 million square feet of Opflex, which can be in pads, pompoms and sausage-like boom. Overall, more than 11 million feet of boom was deployed in the spill.
The best ideas
Most often, the best new ideas identified by BP came from entrepreneurs like Smith — not conglomerates.
Greg Huntsman and Tim Pedigo, two Missouri real estate developers, had spent 18 months "sitting on our hands," Huntsman says, as their business withered with the recession. Then the oil started spewing, and a global nightmare — and moment of opportunity — arose.
Pedigo called a distant relative (his nephew's wife's dad) who sold boom to sop up oil. The partners headed to the Gulf "following the money," Huntsman says.
After watching cleanup crews spray oil off boom stacked on slippery wooden pallets, Pedigo thought: "I can automate this."
He sketched the design for the Boom Blaster, a car-wash-like contraption to clean boom, a task typically done by hand with hoses. Two childhood buddies, who own a car wash manufacturing plant in Missouri, built it.
The blaster cleaned six times as much boom per person than if the work were done by hand, BP says. "It was kind of a cocktail napkin sketch," Pedigo says.
Lee Dragna, 37, sketched his idea for a supersize skimmer, The Big Gulp, while in a La-Z-Boy recliner watching TV. "I kept thinking, 'It can't be this easy,' " says Dragna, who's president of barge builder Lad Services in Morgan City, La.
Dragna attached skimmers to the front of a barge to suck in oil and water. He tested a prototype in his pool. BP says the football-field-size skimmer collected 10 times more oil a day than many smaller and conventional skimmers.
The inspiration for The Big Gulp? Dragna's 10-year-old son, Andrea. He was miffed because he couldn't fish because of the spill. "He said, 'Dad, you can fix anything. You can fix this. Just try,' " Dragna says.
Other entrepreneurs likewise played off their strengths.
Mike Halloran, 46, who sold lawn-mowing equipment in Chicago, watched the spill on TV and recalled a contraption used to clean beaches in Spain. He tracked down the device and hit the road for the Gulf, planning to attach it to a two-wheel, self-propelled tractor made by lawn-mower company Gravely.
"We can have a snow blower on the front one day, clean a parking lot with a sweeper the next and then clean tar balls off the beach," Halloran says.
The beach cleaner lifts the sand and shakes it. Clean sand falls to the beach through a screen. A hopper traps bigger tar balls. The machine cleans a half-acre beach in 60 minutes vs. four hours for a 10-person crew with shovels and bags — the most-often-used beach-cleaning method, Halloran says. BP put 10 of the machines to work and found it good for use in small areas.
For many of the entrepreneurs, patience was a must. The Massachusetts-based MicroSorb Environmental Solutions, which makes what it says is a safe, hydrocarbon-eating microbe, reached out to BP in April, shortly after the spill began, to get its product into the Gulf. Last month, BP began the first tests on some of the 200 microbe proposals it received, Rowe says.
"We said three months ago that (microbes) should be tested," says Billy Nungesser, the president of Plaquemines Parish, La., and a frequent BP critic. "We're a day late and a dollar short," Nungesser says.
Most people, after submitting ideas to BP, waited weeks or months just to get a rejection.
"In June, we couldn't keep up," says Michael Cortez, who also works on BP's technologies team and who, like Rowe, is a BP retiree who returned to help with the spill. By July, BP had 100 people working on the ideas.
The one that stopped the flow of oil was a cap that was placed over the well in July. That solution originated from BP engineers, the company says. But hundreds, if not thousands, of similar ideas came from the public, Rowe says.
Despite the chaos, "We didn't miss anything great," Rowe says.
Others aren't so sure. InnoCentive, an Internet-based network that links scientists, engineers and others around the world, put out a call for solutions, too. It got more than 2,500 submissions. BP never tapped the resource, saying there were too many legal issues, says InnoCentive CEO Dwayne Spradlin.
"The notion that we weren't using all the tools we had is incredible to me," Spradlin says. "The world deserves better."
Get rich quick?
No one is likely to get rich from any of their new products. BP has spent $11 billion on spill response so far. But because bigger spills are rare, there's only so much of a market for new products. Finding customers beyond BP has been tough, the entrepreneurs say.
From the Gulf, Smith took Opflex to China and demonstrated it for government officials after an oil pipeline blast there. He hopes to sell Opflex to spill response contractors in the U.S., too. But he fears they won't buy it because they may make more money deploying traditional boom. "They don't necessarily want to see a product that's reusable," Smith says.
The Boom Blaster was packed up and returned to Missouri. The partners are chasing oil producers in Brazil, oil spill response firms and the U.S. Coast Guard, which often deals with boom, Huntsman says.
Dragna says he's recouped his more than $1 million investment in The Big Gulp from contracts with BP. But he's yet to find another customer. One oil spill response contractor told Dragna the barges were too pricey to have on standby, Dragna says.
He hopes to entice oil companies to together pay a standby fee. In July, several oil companies led byExxonMobil did something similar when they pledged $1 billion to build a system, deployable within 24 hours, to seal a blown deep-water well.
The Obama administration has asked for an increase of $8.6 million for fiscal 2011 for oil spill research funding. That's on top of $6.3 million for fiscal year 2010. Congress has not yet acted on the request. Also, federal legislation has been proposed to require agencies to establish processes to evaluate and deploy cleanup technologies. But only one of the bills specifies funding — and at not more than $5 million a year.
For now, BP says it'll continue to test and develop the ideas it collected. The team has shrunk to 14. Along with the 100 tested ideas, BP says an additional 400 submissions need further evaluation but that some may be feasible.
Leaders in the industry fear progress will stall once major spills fade from the news.
"There will be a strong focus for some years ... but in the absence of a significant (spill) for an extended period, apathy will fall in place," says Jim O'Brien, founder of O'Brien's Response Management, BP's top management contractor for the spill.

Dredging Today-USA Sand Shark Shows Excellent Results


A thunderous assembly of corkscrews, conveyor belts and vibrating screens is devouring the coastline inch by inch, spitting out fluffed and nearly flawlessly clean sand in its wake.
The rolling machine can actually be a little too effective, which alarms ecologists, who treasure the Panhandle’s beaches as something more than outdoor sets for sunbathing. But the truck-sized “Sand Shark” is widely considered the best way of digging up and removing the crude oil deposited here this summer during the nation’s worst offshore-drilling disaster.
In a region still in shock over the financial and psychological damage inflicted by BP PLC’s months-long oil spill, the act of watching and listening to the Sand Shark at work is for many a mesmerizing form of therapy.
“It’s amazing,” said Terry Morris, an oil-spill-response coordinator for Gulf Shores National Seashore, which abuts both ends of Pensacola Beach’s commercial strip of hotels and restaurants. “It leaves the sand as clean as a golf-course sand trap.”
Businesses on or near Pensacola Beach and its neighbor Perdido Key depend on a surge of tourism each year from May to September. But this summer, as the “world’s whitest beaches” were paved black with BP crude, the number of visitors plunged.
In July 2009, for example, about 470,000 vehicles came through the toll booths of Bob Sikes Bridge headed to Pensacola Beach. This year’s July count fell to about 425,000 — and a large share of those weren’t tourists but part of an army of oil-spill responders.
W.A. “Buck” Lee, the highly visible and vocal executive director of the Santa Rosa Island Authority — a sort of city hall for unincorporated Pensacola Beach — is determined to push next year’s July tollbridge count to a half-million. To make that happen, the beaches need to be clean beyond doubt, and that will require a fleet of Sand Sharks, Lee said.
“This is the only machine I’ve seen that truly works,” he said.
A BP technical team designed the first $300,000 Sand Shark, and VT LeeBoy Inc. of North Carolina is fabricating the machines.
The first arrived in Florida in August and is now working the national seashore. Another went to work last week on Perdido Key, near the Florida-Alabama state line. Three more are expected to start sifting through beaches in Florida, Alabama and Mississippi by the end of the month.
Lee wishes they were all in Pensacola Beach — and dialed up to their mostaggressive mode of operation. For now, though, authorities are restricting the Sand Sharks’ operators from digging deeper than 6 inches, citing federal rules that protect historic and archeological features.
But the machines can chew through sand 18 inches deep, and Lee points out to anybody who will listen that, whenever the beach’s sand is replenished — as it was in 2005 — federal authorities require that the rebuilt beach be plowed to a depth of 24 inches once a year for three years, to ensure the sand is soft enough for turtle nesting.
“The federal government requires that, but the federal government doesn’t know that it requires that,” Lee said, exasperated by what he regards as bureaucratic bungling in response to the oil spill.
Even after Sand Sharks have plowed the full 8 miles of Pensacola Beach, Lee is going to press BP to pay for dredging up thousands of tons of additional sugar sand from a few miles offshore and spreading it along the shoreline — an act he hopes will bury a bad memory.
“We have to win back the confidence of tourists,” Lee said.
For the most part, the sand along Pensacola Beach’s hotel strip appears free of oil. The relatively few tar balls still visible in the surf zone range in size and shape from grapes to hamburger patties. And those are so infused with sand that they are not nearly as greasy or as likely to stain as when the first waves came ashore in midsummer.
Bill and Susie Setchel of Sarasota, out for a morning stroll last week, said they had visited Pensacola Beach a few years ago and so decided to come back for a look at one of their favorite coastlines.
“We still think this is still quite lovely,” he said. “Such beautiful sand.”
A few feet away but nearly invisible beneath its coating of sand was a hardened tar ball the size of a peanut shell.
Tons of tar balls are found by people who are trained to look for them. Orlando native Joyce Riesinger works for the state Department of Environmental Protection in the Panhandle. Every morning, she joins one of the many teams comprised of state, BP and Coast Guard personnel for what amounts to precise beachcombing. She said the highest parts of the beach are often the cleanest. The lower portions, including dips and depressions, are filled with the ribbons, mats and balls of tar that came ashore months ago.
“The beach profile kind of directed that,” said Riesinger, whose maps and technical reports are used to direct cleanup efforts.
While driving through the park, Morris, a former chief law-enforcement ranger at Gulf Shores National Seashore, recalled the oil slick’s arrival on a nighttime high tide in late June. Little cleanup took place the next day, and that evening, a new high tide buried the oil beneath fresh sand. That was followed by storms and several days of strong winds that piled even more sand on BP’s crude.
“It was the worst time oil could have hit us,” Morris said.
Eventually, BP contract crews marched on to Pensacola Beach, picking up tar balls by hand, but the national seashore’s supervisors kept heavy equipment out till this year’s bird-and turtle-nesting seasons were mostly over.
Now, hundreds of laborers are digging up and removing tar balls by hand. Morris said the crews are much more effective now that the weather has cooled and the workers are more expert at ferreting out buried oil.
He pointed to Daryl Pitts, a laborer from Pensacola, who had just zeroed in on a small spot of otherwise ordinary-looking beach and was exhuming pancake-sized lumps of crude from a hole about 12 inches deep.
On another section of the park’s shore, the Sand Shark was doing the work of at least 30 Daryl Pittses.
Jason Bragg, directing BP’s mechanical removal of tar balls from Panhandle beaches, said the Sand Shark isn’t a “rocket ship.” But it’s thorough, removing all objects larger than 3 millimeters — about the width of three pinheads, he said. The 11-foot-tall machine weighs 35,000 pounds, moves at one-half to two miles an hour, requires a crew of six to 10 people, and in a pair of 10-hour shifts can clean a strip of sand 8 feet wide and 1.5 miles long, Bragg said.
Daniel Brown, Gulf Island National Seashore’s park superintendent, said his staff is having an intense debate about how deep the Sand Shark should be allowed to operate.
“Our concern is we don’t do more harm by removing oil,” he said. “To us, beaches are a lot more than sand and water.”
The first few feet of sand contains crabs, insects and organic material that provide fundamental support for a beach’s ecology, he said. And yet, when survey crews bored 408 holes in the 7 miles of park seashore known as Fort Pickens, 27 percent of them contained oil as deep as 2 feet below the surface.
Brown said his staff is considering letting the Sand Shark operate at its maximum 18 inches in the most popular swimming areas but only at a 6-inch depth along the park’s more-natural stretches of beach.
“I can see this going on for a long time,” Brown said. “The beaches are not going to get cleaned up in 2010, and probably not in 2011.”
But along less-natural stretches of Pensacola Beach, there is much agreement that the Sand Shark should be unleashed to do its most voracious work possible.
Enid Sisskin, a Pensacola resident and longtime advocate for a drilling ban in the Gulf of Mexico near Florida, thinks removing the oil is an important public-health issue.
Escambia County Commissioner Grover Robinson, whose district includes Pensacola Beach, said the area’s economy depends on it.

'Boom Blaster' triples speed of cleaning booms

Springfield real estate developers' brainstorm benefits the oil industry.

When Springfield native Tim Pedigo saw how BP oil spill workers were hand-scrubbing oily containment booms to get them clean, he knew there had to be a better way.



"I was sent a picture of guys standing on slippery oil-covered pallets scrubbing boom with high-pressure hoses," Pedigo recalled. ... "It was such a primitive way to clean boom."
Spurred by what he saw, Pedigo sketched out a "cocktail-napkin design" for an automated boom cleaner that would more than triple the speed of the cleaning process using a third of the manpower.
His patented "Boom Blaster" machine now is among the most successful new ideas to emerge from the disastrous gulf oil spill cleanup effort, according to BP.

Springfield Roots

Pedigo and partner Greg Huntsman didn't start out in the oil spill cleanup business. They were real estate developers based in Springfield.
Huntsman said they got involved with oil booms while working on a redevelopment of a private island in Florida as the gulf oil crisis began to unfold.
"When the oil spill happened, we began to research booming the whole island," Huntsman said.
They also recognized a potentially lucrative venture selling booms to BP and the Coast Guard, tapping a family connection in the oil boom business. But when they visited an oil boom decontamination site, a light bulb went off.
"The BP guys expressed to Tim that someone needs to develop a better way to clean the boom," Huntsman said.
Cleaning crews had to don protective clothing and manually lay out 100-foot lengths of boom, pressure blasting one side at a time before flipping the boom over to do the other side.
A crew of six could wash a 100-foot section of boom in about half an hour.
"It was a big, messy, dangerous process," Huntsman said.
Pedigo and Huntsman formed a new company, Gulf Coast Environmental Resources, LLC, and commissioned a St. Louis-based car wash manufacturer to build a prototype boom cleaner based on Pedigo's design.
By early July, the machine was put to the test at Grand Isle, La., washing boom fouled with oil and marine growth.
"The oil came off easily, but the marine growth was a problem," Pedigo recalled.
We sent the machine back to St. Louis where we added a pre-soak feature and a brush chamber."
Flying marine debris and vapor are contained inside the machine and the contaminants drop into a catch basin that is connected to a vacuum truck for disposal.

"It Turned A Lot Of Heads"

The improved version of the Boom Blaster worked extremely well, according to Hunter Rowe, BP's deputy technology manager with the company's Alternative Response Technology Group.
His group compared it to a somewhat similar design that also washed oil booms automatically.
"The Boom Blaster was generally more efficient and was a much more robust process," Rowe said. "It's more like a car wash. During our trials it worked as advertised. It turned a lot of heads and made a difference."
In terms of improved efficiency, Rowe said the Boom Blaster was able to clean 410 feet of boom per person, compared to 70 feet of boom per person using the manual scrubbing method.
"This is the kind of innovation that comes along once in a while that truly makes a difference," Rowe said.
"It was easy for us to recommend this for use."
A containment boom that's been washed clean of oil and marine growth emerges from the Boom Blaster for reuse in protecting the shoreline.
Pedigo said BP paid his company a daily rate to clean containment booms coming in from the ocean.
"I foresee situations in the future where we'll be paid by linear foot of boom we clean," he said.
GCER currently has two machines in operation, and a third is being built.
Pedigo declined to say how much BP has paid his company so far. But when asked if the compensation was worth his time and effort, Pedigo didn't hesitate.
"Absolutely," he said.
Pedigo and Huntsman say their boom-cleaning device has applications beyond the gulf oil spill.
They note that oil spills happen worldwide, and their machine is small enough to move quickly to such sites.
"We're also meeting with the Coast Guard to possibly put them on their vessels," Huntsman said.
"Boom is used every day for chemical spills and at ports and harbors where they put boom around ships."
They also plan to take their Boom Blaster concept to oil industry and disaster cleanup trade shows.
"We've created a new technology that's been needed for 30 years," Pedigo said.
